Kion came back to Pridelands soon after the reunion of pridelanders and outlanders. And of course, Kovu didn't recognise him. Yep, seems like Kion has had some bad times, which changed him physically and mentally.

I suppose there are a lot of interesting theories explaining where Kion has disappeared and why Kiara grew up without him around. Some people think he could leave Pridelands because of his romantic relationships with Jasiri/Fuli, or maybe somebody once got hurt by his Roar, so Kion preferred to go away to provide everyone's safety. Personally, I don't have any theories, but I would like to know yours
